Yellow Flowers at the Fence
Wildflowers
Yellow flowers grow in between the fence posts at the horse pasture at our house. No, we did not plant them. And yes, they are wildflowers. Which technically means that they are weeds.
I really should cut them down with the trimmer. Or spray them with weed killer. Or something similar. But I like the color they add, so I don’t always mind them too much. The flowers must not be that tasty, because the horses have eaten all of the grass around them, but they left the flowers. Maybe they leave them there for the added color, too. But probably not.
You can’t see the horses here, because they were off in another part of the pasture, in case you were wondering. Or maybe they are just camera-shy. I’m not sure. Unlike Mister Ed, they do not talk all that much. But that’s okay.
But they do drop in to say “Hay” every now and then.
Weeds versus Flowers
Whenever I think about weeds, which usually happens when I am cutting grass or doing other work around the yard, I think about Adam and Eve. My first thought is usually, “If they had not been so stupid and selfish, then we would not have all of these weeds!”
But then I realize that we are all the same. If they had not messed up, the next people would have. Or if they did not, someone after them would have. If it had been me, I definitely would have messed up somehow.
So then with some strange twists and turns, weeds can be a reminder of God’s grace. Because just like Adam and Eve and their gift of weeds, the gift that keeps on giving, we all mess up. Instead of thinking just about how they messed up, I am reminded of how we all mess up. That can be a bad thing if it ends right there. We could all be the cause of the weeds and other problems that we have around us if that were the end of it.
But we have a gracious God who offers his grace to all those who accept it. Because we all need it.
I know I do.

About the Photo
As with the recent photo of a morning view at our house, I thought it would be good to get a little photography practice with some of the things around our house. The fence looked like a good subject. It did not talk back any, and it even held really still while I was photographing it. You can’t ask for a better subject than that.
The processing here is a good bit different from what I have done lately. Instead of the balancing out the light and shadows, here I went for more contrast and less color saturation. Just for something different.
This photo might not inspire the same emotional reactions that a beautiful waterfall or a beach scene might bring, but that’s okay. Every pass in football is not a touchdown, and every hit in baseball is not a home run. Sometimes these small, simple photos are just as nice, too.
Different can be good sometimes.
