World of Water
A boardwalk runs over a watery area of Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Area in Tennessee.
So no, this isn’t some scene from a Waterworld-like planet, but rather just a boardwalk through an area that sometimes floods from the nearby Forked Deer River. And as you can see, the area was definitely flooded while we were there.
We were actually pretty excited to be able to walk on the boardwalk on this visit to Pinson Mounds. On all of our previous visits, the boardwalk had been closed. They close it from December through February because of high water, and they also close it other times of the year if the water gets to be too high. But although the water was relatively high this time, it wasn’t high enough to close the boardwalk, so off we went.
It really was a neat scene, too. And a still photo can be a bit deceiving because although everything looks still here, the water was actually gently flowing all around us. With the sounds of the lapping water and the birds tweeting around us, it was almost surreal. But cool.
