When a Dollar Is More Than a Dollar

The other day, I stopped by Walgreens to pick up two prescriptions. One is normally $50, and the other is normally $10. But when the cashier rang them up, she said, “That will be $1.” I didn’t argue with that. I just paid my $1 and left. As it turns out, the $50 prescription was $1, and the $10 prescription was free, just in case you are wondering. I imagine it has to do with insurance changes at the beginning of the year, but that isn’t the point here. The point is that I only paid $1 instead of $60.

And then a little while later, out in the parking lot, I found a one dollar bill. Just lying out there by the car. One dollar. The same amount that I had paid at Walgreens. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

Once again, to me this isn’t about why things cost what they did. This is just one more example of God providing for our needs. Whether we know we need it or not.

In my family, we have seen that over and over again. God may not always provide for all of our wants, but he definitely provides for all of our needs. Even if it is as small of a need as one single dollar.

This reminds me of several Bible verses, such as this one: “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5 NASB)

Maybe it is just a gentle reminder from God that he is there working. Maybe it was supposed to be a reminder of all the times in the past year when we had some needs, and those needs were all met. Or maybe it will be more important in the future when some greater need than just a dollar comes up and I am wondering where things will come from. All good things come from God.

Here is another verse to remember: “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NASB)

So just remember that if you put your trust in Him, God will meet all your needs. And I will try to remember that, too.
