Walk around the (Disney) World
A brick walkway, known as Walk around the World, circles Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World, with the Contemporary Resort off in the distance.
On our July visit to the area, we were looking for a place to do some walking, and we decided to give the Walk around the World at Walt Disney World a try. The walkway was installed in the mid-1990s, and guests could buy bricks that were engraved with their names, hometowns, birthdays, anniversaries, or several other things.
However, there was a catch - this walkway does not go all the way around Seven Seas Lagoon. The main portion of the walkway runs from World Drive near the Contemporary Resort on the east side of the Magic Kingdom entrance, past the Magic Kingdom, and then over toward the Grand Floridian. However, this walkway stops at the canal that leads from Seven Seas Lagoon to the backstage Magic Kingdom area where the Electrical Water Pageant floats are stored.
Another portion of the walkway runs between the Polynesian Resort and the Wedding Pavilion, but it does not go all the way to the Grand Floridian. And nothing exists for the long stretch between the Transportation and Ticket Center and the Contemporary Resort.
One would guess that there was not enough of a demand for bricks to put a walk all the way around the lagoon. And that would have taken quite a few bricks, as the walkway would have been a few miles long. Oh well.
For our walk, we started out at the Contemporary, walking all the way past the Magic Kingdom to the end of the walkway at the canal. There were some others walking between the Contemporary and the Magic Kingdom, but once we passed the park entrance and the boat docks, there were no other people around.
It was peaceful out there, and we could watch the boats pass on the lagoon, or see the Monorails pass on the opposite side of the trail. Near the Magic Kingdom, we could watch the trains of the Walt Disney World Railroad venture off into the trees, and then hear the whistle as the train reached the different crossings. And because we were there in the early evening, it was relatively cool, adding to the peacefulness even more.
In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we went back for another walk a few nights later. And once again, it was peaceful and uncrowded, just like before.
It is always fun to discover those little out-of-the-way places at Walt Disney World.

For this photo, I tried to create something a little bit unusual and out of the ordinary. Looking back at it, I may have gone slightly too far, but I was somewhat trying to go for the look of Tim Burton’s recent Alice in Wonderland movie.
