Sunken Road at Shiloh
Walking along the Sunken Road at the Civil War battlefield at Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee.
During the first day of fighting (April 6, 1862) during the Battle of Shiloh, the United States Army took up a defensive position along a sunken road next to a field. Much fierce fighting took place in this area, causing it to be known as the Hornets Nest.
These days, of course, the area is quite peaceful and scenic, giving a great contrast to how things were during the battle. The split-rail fence makes for a nice photographic element, too, although I don’t know if a fence was actually there during the battle.
And once again, I went with a more muted color scheme for this photo. It just seems to fit. And the clouds did add a good bit of interesting atmosphere that day.
