Sandwiches and Yellow Dresses in Bangkok

One of the many things that surprised me about Bangkok was the number of street vendors that were present. Just about everywhere you turned, you could find someone selling something. For example, the lady on the left was selling soybean milk and sandwiches, while the lady on the right was selling different fruits.

But what struck me about this scene was the line of yellow dresses in the store window behind them. I thought the dresses made for a nice background, and that is why I chose to photograph this scene. Just a little something out of the ordinary. Either someone really likes yellow, or someone way overbought on yellow material and needed to do something with it.

Lots of the street vendors were selling food, but others were selling souvenir items, clothes, trinkets, handbags, sunglasses, and just about anything else you could possibly want. And for the food items, the prices were pretty good. Those sandwiches were going for 15 baht, or about 50 cents. I do wonder what the health department might say about that here at home, but there didn’t seem to be any trouble there. I’m sure the rule of “caveat emptor” applies, but no one seemed to have a problem with it. And the food often did smell good, too.

We had arrived in Bangkok around midnight, and the sidewalks of the streets were pretty much deserted, as you would expect. So Adam and I were surprised the next morning to see all of the street vendors everywhere, some just with carts, others with tents that weren’t out the night before. And then by nighttime they were all gone again.

Just another of the many ways that things are different there.
