Ron Jon at Night / End of Summer
Ron Jon at Night
When we are at Cocoa Beach, Florida, we always stop in at Ron Jon Surf Shop. Usually more than once, actually. And because it is open 24 hours a day, dropping in at night is no problem at all.
This year, the building seemed more colorful at night. I don’t know if they got new lighting, or if it was just me. Either way, I got out the camera and took a few pictures before we went inside for our usual shopping. And as usual, we found some things we just couldn’t live without. Even though we had just been there a few days before.

End of Summer
Summer has officially ended. Yes, the calendar says that summer lasts almost until the end of September. But there is more to summer than just what the calendar says. And at our house, summer is over.
Our summer officially ended yesterday when Laura started back to school. Jaylin still has a few days left, because he doesn’t start until next Monday. But the teachers had to start yesterday for their week of inservice, and that meant that Laura had to go.
Because it is inservice week, we aren’t quite into our usual school schedule yet. And even when school starts next Monday, it will take us a few days to get to our usual routine. For example, I was already thinking this morning that I would have to start figuring in more time for making Jaylin’s lunch each day, in addition to making my own. Just one of the little things that I seem to forget about pretty quickly once school gets out.
And then there’s the whole issue of getting up earlier, too. I forgot what it was like to get up before the sun does. But yesterday provided a not-so-gentle reminder. Why is it so hard to get up when it is still dark outside? I’m sure it’s some sort of mental thing that could be explained by some over-educated bearded guy. You know the kind that I’m talking about. He would probably use all kinds of big words and highly technical terms that I might understand if I had paid a little more attention in that one psychology class in college. But psychology didn’t really have much of anything to do with engineering, so I pretty much forgot everything right after the class had ended. I’m sure there is some sort of psychological term for that, too. And anyway, that bearded guy’s explanation of why getting up at half past dark is so hard wouldn’t make getting up that hard any easier.
If that weren’t enough, my stomach started asking for food about 9:30 yesterday morning. Somewhat loudly. That reminded me that I had eaten breakfast a good bit earlier than I was used to, and also that lunch time hadn’t changed. Looks like I need to go get a few snacks to keep around the office.
Of course, school starting back is just part of the natural progression of things. Just as the seasons change every four months, so does school start back in the fall. Learning is a good thing, too - think about where we would be without it. If we didn’t learn anything, we wouldn’t be able to do anything. And I am thankful for all I have learned, both in school and out of it.
School is good. But does it have to start so early?
