River View at Shiloh

A view of the Tennessee River from Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee.

One of the reasons that Shiloh was an important Civil War battle was because of its proximity to the Tennessee River. General Grant and his army had arrived here by way of the river and were camping near the river bank when they were attacked by Confederate soldiers, setting off one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

These days, the view of the Tennessee River is quite peaceful, much different from how it was during the battle all those years ago. Near the center of the photo, you can see the wake of a fishing boat making its way along. And an occasional barge will make its way up or down the river, too, carrying stuff from place to place. But partly because of the protection that the park designation provides, the whole area is mostly calm and quiet.

And very relaxing. Who wouldn’t love to have a view like that every day?
