Praying Angel

A praying angel marks a grave at the White Sulphur Cemetery at Pickwick Landing State Park.

During our church’s Couples Retreat at Pickwick Landing State Park, we had some free time on Saturday afternoon. My parents said, “We are going to look at the cemetery down the road. Do you want to come along?” So of course, Laura and I agreed. After all, old cemeteries can be rather interesting.

In this particular cemetery, there were indeed several interesting grave markers. Some of them were more recent, and some of them were around a hundred years old. But the one that caught my eye the most was this praying angel.

Perhaps I should have had Laura stand by the angel to give a better perspective of size, because it really is large. The angel is at least life sized. Well, I guess that depends on what size angels really are. I should say that the angel was at least the same size as a normal human being. And I found it interesting that this marker was one of the more recent ones, placed there sometime after 2008 according to the inscription. Usually the larger grave markers are all a good bit older than that, but not this one.

Maybe this praying angel stood out because of its size. Or maybe it stood out because of its white color among the mostly gray markers. Or maybe it just stood out because of its unique design.

For whatever reason, I liked it. Although I don’t know that I will necessarily need one for my grave, whenever that time may be. Just something simple will do for me.
