Photo: Inside the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World

Here we are on the Monorail platform inside the Grand Canyon Concourse of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World, looking out the large window at one end of the building. I always like the large amounts of natural light that come in through the large windows during the daylight hours. Looking out the window, you can see the Bay Lake Tower at the right and Bay Lake itself beyond that.

Do they even call it the Grand Canyon Concourse any more? Because I still call it that. They do still have Mary Blair’s Grand Canyon murals on the sides of the main elevator shaft. However, most of the other Grand Canyon inspired colors and such have been removed. I wasn’t a big fan of the location of the Fantasia shop when it moved out into the open space in the middle of the concourse, but I do have to admit that those large Mickey ears to make for some cool photos.

Of course, most people wouldn’t necessarily consider the Desert Southwest color scheme all that “contemporary” any more, so the hotel has to change to keep up with the times. At least a hotel with a Monorail running through the middle of it is still very much contemporary, if not even futuristic, because that is still something most of us don’t get to see every day.
