Photo: Alone In the Ocean
Laura seemingly has the entire ocean to herself at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida, in this photo from our summer 2014 trip.
Of course, she isn’t really alone, because if she were, then who took the photo? And I wasn’t the only other one there, either, as you might imagine. But we were out before most of the people got there for the day, which allowed me to frame this photo so that no one else was in it. And if anyone wants to give us our own private beach spot, then we would gladly take it. Anyone?
One thing that interests me when thinking about this photo is just how many people visit the beach each year. We like it at this particular location because there never are too many people when we are there, but there are still always several people there on any given day, at least in the summer when we are there.
I really don’t have any solid information to base this on, but I would guess that more people in the United States visit the beach than go to the Disney theme parks each year. In that statement, “beach” can mean any beach in the United States, which has some rather lengthy coastlines of beaches at the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. If you want to include those who go to a nearby lake, which doesn’t technically fit into my “beach” definition, then you have even more people. Yes, most of them go to the beach in the warm summer months and not the cold winter months, except for the beaches in warmer climates such as Hawaii, Southern California, and Florida. But still, with all of the beaches that there are to go to, and all of the photos that you can see from beaches at any given time, that ends up being a lot of people.
And yes, that is the kind of thing that I think about sometimes. “Just how many people go to the beach each year?” Maybe I need a hobby.
