Pelican at Castaway Cay

A pelican sits on a post at Castaway Cay, the private Bahamas island of the Disney Cruise Line, as the Disney Dream ship is visible off in the distance.

I kept getting the feeling that this bird was watching me all of the time. He never would look away. I thought about challenging him to a staring contest, but I never could get up the nerve to do it. Still, he kept just sitting there. And when I came back later, he was still there. Never moving. Always watching. What’s that? This isn’t a real pelican? Well, then, that would explain a lot of things, wouldn’t it?

This carved pelican is actually located near the Head’s Up Bar on Castaway Cay, which features a pelican theme. If you haven’t gotten the joke of the name yet, it will come to you in a minute. I’m not a bar person, as you may know, but I do like walking out to the bar to get some photos, because it has a great view of the nearby bay. So this guy appears in several of my photos, because I liked what he added to the scene. Maybe I will post another one or two of him in the future. But don’t be surprised if he looks exactly the same in all of them.

Look at the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? - Matthew 6:26

About the Photo

I have mentioned a few times how I used some off-center compositions quite a bit on this trip, and this is another example of that. Maybe too off-center for some people, but I like how the ship fills in the space in the background. I worked on this one a bit to bring out the clouds in the sky, because as you know if you have read the 2015 Disney Cruise Trip Report, rain was the theme of our Castaway Cay day.

A single RAW exposure, processed in Photoshop. Read more about the photo software and gear I use at the camera gear page.
