Pearl’s Oyster House
The red building of Pearl’s Oyster House stands out in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. This probably isn’t the best picture composition-wise, but we were on a fundraising walk, and the rain was starting to get harder, as you can see from a few raindrops on the camera lens. So I just snapped three quick frames for the HDR and moved on, putting my camera back in the bag.
At first glance, it looks like I used selective color for the red of the building, leaving the rest of the shot in black and white. But that isn’t the case. It just really was that gray and bleak outside that day.

The Things Kids Say
This morning at school as the kids were coming in to Laura’s class of four and five year olds, one of the boys in her class said, “Miss Laura, today is my brother’s birthday, and he’s seven!”
Because Laura had taught his older brother as well, she said, “Yes, and he is 31 years younger than me, because yesterday was my birthday.”
The kid stopped and looked at her and exclaimed, “No he’s seven!”
Laughing, Laura said, “But he’s 31 years younger than me.”
The kid again said frustratingly, “No, he’s SEVEN!” And we couldn’t stop laughing.
A minute or two later, as I was leaving, the same kid asked, “Miss Laura, is that your husband?”
“Yes,” she said, “and he has been for 18 years.”
“No,” I said, “I’m FORTY!”
She hit me.
