Nassau Harbor in the Bahamas

Blue View

Nassau Harbor in the Bahamas

The blue of the sky matches the blue of the water in Nassau Harbor in the Bahamas, as seen from the deck of the Disney Dream cruise ship during our 2018 Christmas Disney Cruise.

On most of the Disney Cruises we have taken, I usually find a little time when we are docked in Nassau to roam around the ship and take a few photos. That was the case when this photo was taken. Laura and Karen had gone to a craft time. Brant and the kids were playing basketball. So I walked around the perimeter of the top deck, looking to see what I could see.

I always enjoy the distant views from the top deck. Due to the height of the ship, you can see for miles. I am always impressed with this view with the Atlantis hotel off in the distance, along with the bridge leading over to that area.

Also, I like to see all of the boats of various sizes out in the water. On this day, there were several boats out there, including several sailboats. However, the sailboats were not really going anywhere, as you can see by the fact that none of them had their sails up. It must be nice to sail into a harbor, drop anchor, and just float there for a while.

I could get used that sort of lifestyle. Except that I donʻt have a sailboat. Or know how to sail. That might make it a little difficult.

But seeing the boats out there like that is still always cool!

Whatʻs In a Name?

Many people know that Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. However, many people do not realize that Nassau is not an island. Nassau is a city on the island of New Providence Island, so that Nassau is not the name of the island itself.

There is an island named Grand Bahama Island, and it is part of the Bahamas, but Nassau is not on that island. The city of Freeport is found on Grand Bahama Island however. And once again, many people may think that Freeport is the name of the island and not the city.

Interestingly, there are over 700 islands that make up the Bahamas. They have almost all of the alphabet covered, from Abaco Island to Yuma Island. I guess they couldnʻt come up with a good Z name. But they do have some good names, such as Great Ragged Cay, Grunt Cay, Egg Island, Cockroach Cay, Jamaica Cay (not to be confused with the island nation of Jamaica, of course), Laughing Bird Cay, and even Noname Cay. Plus some whose names might be intended to keep people away, such as Danger Cay, Devilʻs Cay, and Deadmanʻs Cay.

It seems like it might be fun to name an island, because apparently, you can give it any name you want. Or even Noname at all.

Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish. - Psalm 49:20

About the Photo

There is nothing much that is special about this photo. I just like the view. Interestingly, I took a photo from the same location on one of our earlier cruises. But there is one main difference. I used a wide angle lens on that previous photo to get everything in the frame that I could. This time around, I zoomed in a good bit to get closer to the boats and bridge off in the distance. Same location, different focal length.
