My Grandmother's Lamp - 50with50 No. 7
Light Up the Night
An antique lamp that was at my grandparents’ house for years sits on our old piano. This is the 7th entry in the 50with50 series.
I might be wrong about this, but I believe this lamp was originally a kerosene lamp, and then someone converted it to electricity somewhere along the way. I am not necessarily an antiques kind of person (although I getting closer to becoming an antique myself each day). But I have always thought this lamp was pretty interesting.
When my grandmother passed away, we were going through her things, and somehow Laura and I ended up with this lamp. I did not complain about it at all. It actually fits the decor of our house rather well, I think.
However, we did make one change. Instead of a standard light bulb, we put in an LED color changing bulb. This bulb even comes with a remote, so you can change the color to whatever you want. Or you can just have it slowly fade through all of the colors continuously. That latter option is what we chose. And this lamp is now on a timer, so it comes on and changes colors each evening. That last touch makes it fit our style of things even more!
It is an antique with a new twist!
Old Things
These days, I am finding that old things aren’t all that old anymore. Or maybe that is a bit relative.
It is a little strange to walk through an antique store and see toys that I had as a child being sold as antiques. It is also a little strange when some television shows that I clearly remember watching are now 30 or more years old.
Where does the time go, anyway?
I guess when the old things don’t seem so old, that must mean that I am an old thing, too. Oh well, I might as well embrace it.

About the Photo
As usual, the 50with50 title probably gives away a good bit about this photo. I did take it with a 50mm prime lens. And the only light for this photo was the light for the lamp, along with a little bit of natural light coming in through the window to the left. That made the photo just a little dark, until I ran the Raw file through Aurora HDR to brighten up some of the shadows.
You can’t tell too much, because there isn’t much here besides the lamp, but the focus was pretty tight on the lamp thanks to having the aperture opened wide. If you are wondering, that lamp is sitting on the old piano seen in an earlier post. However, it now sits at the opposite end of the piano from where it was shown in that earlier photo.
Also, you can’t tell from this photo that the bulb has any color to it, because of the way that the photo turned out. So you will just have to take my word for it. Also, you can’t tell that it is constantly changing color, since this is just a still photo. Maybe I should have included a video, too.
