Mississippi River / Observations of the Past Week

Mississippi River

As we were walking the Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s last fall, the route took us along the bluffs with a great view of the Mississippi River. Memphis was built on the bluffs overlooking the river, which helps to protect the city from the changing river.

Also visible here is the iconic Hernando de Soto bridge, on which Interstate 40 crosses the river. You still hear people refer to it as the “New Bridge,” even though it was built in 1973, almost 40 years ago. But that does make it newer than the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge for Interstate 55, which was built in 1949. So “new” is a relative term.

Oh, and did I mention that it was a rainy day?

Observations of the Past Week (1/16-1/22)

Like water under the bridge, here are the Observations from the Past Week from Twitter and Facebook. How was that for a smooth transition?

Do you ever think they are trying to see just how many people they can get on their pregame and halftime shows? (Now here is the pregame show with Mike, Chuck, Bill, Ralph, Roger, Armando, Frank, Fred, Bobby, Coach Ed, and Tank. And Ira the Game-Picking Goat.)

Had some delicious soup for supper. That girl can cook. (And by that girl, I mean my wife.)

Glad I was going north instead of south on Germantown Parkway this morning. It looked more like Germantown Parkinglot. (Maybe they knew what they were doing when they named it a “Park” way.)

I keep having to stop the music I’m listening to when I answer the phone. Wouldn’t want them to think I’m partying while I’m working. (Because I’m not. Really.)

Almost time for basketball practice. Not mine. If you’ve seen me play, you know no amount of practice will help. (Which either means I’m really good, or really bad. You decide.)

Why is “Wednesday” so hard to spell? I think the calendar makers needed an excuse to use more ink to drive up their prices. (Or they just like to point and laugh at those who can’t spell Wednesday.)

Oh no! We’re going to get snowed in with only a couple of days’ supply of tortilla chips and Poncho’s cheese dip! Oh, the horror! (For those of you outside the Memphis area who have never had Poncho’s cheese dip, I’m sorry.)

So now tomorrow is officially a snow day. Who knew this would have been the year to get a snowmobile? (Either that, or a good pair of skis.)

A fun Friday: snow, a walk in the snowy woods, a movie, good food. And work, too. (Snow days - they are cold and occasionally inconvenient, but also fun.)

Our day: a basketball game, a birthday party (not mine), and now back home. Fun times! (It wasn’t my basketball game either, actually.)

Dear Saturday, why must you leave so soon? We have an extra bed if you would like to stay longer. (Saturday is always a welcome, but fleeting, guest.)
