Looking Out Over Waimea Canyon in Hawaiʻi

Looking out over Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaiʻi, as seen during our 2018 Kauaʻi Trip.

To say we were impressed with the view at Waimea Canyon is probably an understatement. It was a spectacular place, and we loved every bit of it. I especially liked most any view that included Waipoʻo Falls, which is the waterfall that you can see off to the left. If you have read some of the other posts around here, you might remember that we eventually reached the top of that waterfall.

As nice as this view was, we were not even at the main lookout site. We had just stopped along the road that led up along the side of Waimea Canyon. I don’t know that the view was any better from the lookout site. Different, yes, because it was from a different angle and without some of the rocky areas that are in the foreground here. But this view was still just as good, especially compared to our flat lands back home.

Also, being up so high, we could see for miles. Although you can’t see it in this photo, in many places we could see all the way to the ocean. That was pretty impressive, too.

As you might guess, I took lots and lots of photos at Waimea Canyon on our visit. And even with as many as I have shared, I still have more that I have not yet posted. So it is fun to look back at those photos and find a new gem to share sometimes.

Driving Around

While we were driving in Kauaʻi, just about every car we saw there had a Hawaiʻi license plate. That makes sense, of course, because it is rather difficult to drive to Hawaiʻi from one of the other states in these United States.

However, I recently drove between Memphis and Nashville a couple of times. That is only about a 200 mile drive one way. Not that far at all in the grand scheme of things. Just a short trip, all in our state of Tennessee.

When I drive somewhere, I have a habit of checking out the license plates of other cars, just to see where they were from. And just in that short span of highway, I saw cars from Maine to California. From Florida to Oregon. From Michigan to Texas. And of course several of the interior states, too.

I should have kept up with how many states I saw cars from, because I know it was well over half of the states. I even saw a car with a Hawaiʻi license plate, believe it or not. It was pretty impressive to see cars from all over as I was driving. I wondered what some of them were doing so far from home and what brought them either to or through Tennessee, but I suppose that really is not any of my business, is it?

It is always cool to see people from all over this big country of ours!

About the Photo

As you might imagine, a photo like this is pretty good on its own. It does not need very much help.

However, because of the large distance across Waimea Canyon and because of the humidity, the photo was slightly hazy. That is normal under those conditions. And the haze can be overcome, too. I increased the saturation and contrast, but not too much. I also turned down the black level slider to make the black areas more black. That have a better, less hazy look. Almost better than in person, even. Almost.
