Laura as the Little Mermaid for Halloween
This past weekend was our church’s annual Fall Festival, which always includes a Trunk or Treat time where people decorate their cars and pass out candy to the children for Halloween. Laura always comes up with interesting ideas for her trunk, and this year was no different.
As you can see, Laura was dressed as Ariel, the Little Mermaid, complete with Flounder swimming by her side. She even had a fork for a dinglehopper to comb her hair. Her costume was a big hit with many who passed by during the evening, and she got lots and lots of comments about it.
If you are wondering, the costume is actually a one-piece pajama set from Walmart, complete with the hood of red hair. However, there were no flippers with the pajamas, and Laura thought it would be strange for her regular feet to show, so she made some flippers to slip over her legs. She found an origami fish pattern online and modified it to look like Flounder. She covered a beanbag chair with a gray blanket to be the rock she was sitting on, while the blue car was supposed to be the sea.
Because the actual Trunk or Treat time was after dark, she had some lights hanging around the edge of the trunk, which you can somewhat see in the photo even though they were not turned on yet. She also had the Little Mermaid soundtrack playing for mood music. And occasionally she would say in a sing-song Ariel voice, “Look, Flounder! Here is my friend Jaylin!” Or whoever happened to be there at the time. Or sometimes she would ask them if she could use her dinglehopper on their hair. Good stuff.
As it turns out, the pajama costume ended up being a really good choice for this year. Unlike last year, when we were all sweating at this event, this year we were all freezing. The temperature was in the 40s, and it felt pretty cool when the sun went down. She had on a few layers under the pajamas, just for good measure.
You could probably already guess, but Laura enjoys these sorts of things. You can see some of her previous Trunk or Treat ideas in these posts. She did not win for the best trunk, but that was okay. She had a good time doing it and gave out lots of candy, and that was the point of it all. Someone said that we had over 600 people in attendance that night. I am not sure if they were able to get an accurate count with everyone constantly moving around between the food, petting farm, inflatables, and games, but there certainly were a lot of people there. It was a fun night, and I’m sure Laura will come up with something at least as interesting for next year, too.

About the Photo
Just a quick photo with my regular Olympus camera here. However, I switched from the fisheye lens that I so often use to the more standard zoom lens to be able to focus more on Laura and her trunk without getting too much of the surrounding vehicles in the photo as well. Nothing against them, because they are our friends and had good trunk ideas, too. But the focus here was meant to be on Laura.
