Jaylin's Hat / MLK Day

Jaylin’s Hat

Last fall, I had ordered a new hat from Buckaroo Hatters in Covington, Tennessee. Nice folks there. When we went to pick up my hat, Mike of Buckaroo Hatters was kind enough to give Jaylin a hat of his own. How cool is that?

Because we went to pick up the hat on a Sunday afternoon, Jaylin was already dressed for church in his suit, and the hat looked great with what we was wearing. So of course we went right home and took some pictures. I haven’t posted any of them before now, because we were saving the pictures to give as Christmas presents. But now Christmas is over, so here is one of the pictures.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today is the observation of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on January 15, 1929. Of course, he went on to be a great leader of the civil rights movement, urging people to use nonviolent methods to get their point across. He went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 because of his efforts.

I greatly appreciate the advancements that Dr. King and the others with him made back in those days, before his assassination here in Memphis in 1968. This federal holiday was first observed in 1986 after being signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1983.

Sometimes I wonder – if it hadn’t been for the work of Dr. King, among others, how would my family be different today?
