Interesting Sunset Color

One day last week, we got home right as the sun was going down. It was still cloudy out as it had been all day, but I thought the sky had a rather unique color to it. As soon as we got inside the house, I grabbed my camera and went out on the front porch for some photos. I snapped the shutter a few times, and then went back inside to do whatever was next without thinking much more about it.

Later on that evening I was looking at Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, and I was seeing lots of great sunset photos from my friends in town. You know the kind - the setting sun is throwing some great colors on the clouds while the blue sky peeks through in places. And in looking at those, I was a little jealous that we didn’t get that kind of sunset at our house. There wasn’t any blue sky to be seen, and we couldn’t even actually see the sun because of all the clouds. But once again, I didn’t think that much more about it.

A few days later, I was downloading photos off of my memory card, and I came across the photos that I had taken that night. Even though there was no blue sky and no sun, I was struck by the color of light from the sky, and the effect that it had on everything, including the still-frozen grass from the freezing rain of the day before.

Suddenly, it didn’t bother me at all that we didn’t have one of those traditional sunsets. Because our sunset was rather unique.

And if you are wondering, I didn’t use any color filters while processing this photo. I just turned up the saturation slightly to make the color stand out just a bit more. It really was that cool in person.
