Not Too Scary

Happy Halloween! October 31 has rolled around again, as it seems to do this time every year. So if that is your kind of thing, I hope you enjoy it!

Every year right before Halloween, our church has its annual Fall Festival, complete with a Trunk or Treat. If you aren’t familiar with that, several people decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out candy. Sort of like Trick or Treat without having to go to everyone’s house in your neighborhood. And you know you can trust everyone, too.

And as always, Laura decorated our trunk as one of the Trunk or Treat entries (see some of her past Trunk or Treat creations here). As you can see from the photo above, she used the Elmer the Patchwork Elephant costume she had made for school a few years ago. The cardboard elephant was made for a separate school project earlier in the year, and the inflatable elephants were used in a previous Trunk or Treat entry. Some lights around the edge of the trunk topped it off. Simple, but fun.

When the kids would come up to the car, they would put their hands under the elephant’s trunk, and out would come a piece of candy. It was simple, but the kids loved it! And the adults did, too! They were saying, “That is so cute!” Or, “That is really clever!” Or, “How did that work?” A few people asked me if that was my idea. But no, it was all Laura’s. My contribution was the saying, “Put your hand under his trunk for a treat. Trunk or treat!” Some people got it. But most everyone loved the interactive element of it. Sometimes the simple things are as good as anything.

About the Photo

As you might guess, there was not much available light for this photo. It was not quite dark yet, but it was really close. The parking lot lights were on, but that was about it.

Not to worry, though. I just turned up the ISO setting of the camera to 3200. That is higher than what I typically use, but it worked here without too much camera noise. I had the aperture wide open, or as wide as this lens would go at the focal length I had selected, at f/4.5. That worked pretty well, I think.

I did clean up the photo just a bit in Adobe Photoshop. But unlike some of the photos that I share here, this one did not need an over-the-top look to it. It was fine just as it is.
