The Great Snow of 2021 - Part 3

Still More Snow Photos

Perhaps by now, you have seen Part 1 and Part 2 of the Great Snow of 2021, in which we received a good amount of snow during Presidents Day week. Because that much snow is somewhat unusual for us, I took lots of photos. And I am sharing those photos here with you. These are the last that I have, however. So feel free to either mourn or rejoice, depending on your feelings about seeing all of these snow photos. I even could have broken these down into two different posts, but I figured I would share all of them at one time just to keep the posts to a trilogy. Remember the fourth Indiana Jones movie? Or the fourth - and fifth - Pirates of the Caribbean movies? Three snow posts should be sufficient here.

All of these posts start with a view down the driveway, and this one is no different. Laura and I walked down to the street to check the mail, and you can see our tracks here, along with Copper’s tracks to our right. Side note: the trip to the mailbox was futile because the mail did not run at all that week during the snow. Remember when “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” was the informal creed of the postal service? You can mark snow off of that list.

Continuing with the “Snow on trees” theme of these posts, here are some cedar trees weighted down by the snow. I liked the character that the extra weight brought to these trees. They almost seem like a group of grumpy old men sitting together and discussing something.

I liked this view from behind the cedar trees in the previous photo, so I am sharing it here with you, too. If you had followed all of those tracks in the snow, some of them would have led back to me, because I walked up to those other trees to check out the view, too.

I took this photo because I enjoyed spending time with my walking partner. Laura and I enjoyed our summer walks together, but we haven’t gotten to take as many walks during the school year. We enjoyed being able to walk again, even if we did have to bundle up to stay warm.

We planted this blue spruce tree close to 20 years ago. It is still not as tall as we are, even after all of this time. For whatever reason, it is a slow-growth tree. But I am not speaking ill of it, because it survived when all of the others we planted did not. And it looks rather Christmas-like, especially here with its added decorations.

Laura the Snow Angel

Laura decided to make a snow angel since the conditions for it looked good. Lots of powdery snow and warmer temperatures than the previous days made it seem like the ideal time. She dropped down in the snow and went to work.

Her resulting snow angel turned out quite well. In fact, it looks like a perfect angel. An angel created by an angel - pretty cool, in my opinion.

I present to you a view up the driveway to go along with the usual views down the driveway. Everything looked so nice on this day with the snow on the ground and the blue sky overhead. We were ready to go in and warm up, but we had definitely enjoyed our time outside.

Sunset and Snow

A few hours later, I happened to look out the window and see that the sun was setting. I grabbed my camera and went out on the front porch to get a few more photos. I did not grab my coat or boots, so I did not stay long or leave the front porch, but the view was nice from there.

The winter sun creates some long shadows, and it also adds a touch of orange to the white and blue tones. It was a much different look than earlier in the day, and it was pretty cool.

For this last view, I turned to the right from the previous photo. There was a little less sun and more long, blue shadows in that direction. How cool is that? And not just because it was cool (or cold) outside. God creates lots of beautiful things.

The End

So that is the end of the Great Snow of 2021. However, the snow did stick around for several days. In fact, we still have a couple of small snow patches still on the ground, a week after I took these photos, and after a couple of near 70 degree days. The length of time to melt the snow shows just how much snow we got. It was fun, and it was good to have an unexpected week of all three of us being home together. I am not that sad to see it go, and I am definitely not complaining about the warmer weather outside. But if it won’t be another 30 years before we get this much snow again, I won’t complain about that, either.

About the Photos

I used the same preset that I had used in the past two posts. It worked well for those, so it worked well here, too. I thought about changing things up a little, such as using a little less color saturation or having some black and white photos. But how could you desaturate that beautiful blue sky? And how could you completely take out the greens of the trees, or the blues of the shadows? So full eye-popping color it is.
