The First Snow Day of 2018

Snow!

We had our first snow day of the new year last week. Followed by our second and third. All due to the one bit of snow that we got. It really started out more as freezing rain and ice, but then it eventually changed over to snow. I had thought it was about to end by the time the snow started falling, but we ended up getting more snow than I thought we might. Not that I am a meteorologist or anything. I just know we don’t get all that much snow here.

We ended up with between 2 and 3 inches of snow at our house by the time it was all over. Just enough to keep us housebound for a couple of days. No complaints from us, however. We aren’t the kind to get cabin fever very quickly, so we were happy with the time at home. Fortunately, the freezing rain and ice had not lasted long enough to cause any power line issues, so we were warm and electrified inside our house. It was all good.

Except that I was not quite well. So I did not venture out for many snow photos as I sometimes do. All I got that day was this quick photo. I got my camera all set, ran out on the front porch, took the photo, and ran back inside. That was it. And I was fine with it. And I am much better now, by the way.

Since that time, we have actually had our second snow of the year, believe it or not. Some years, we don’t even get one snow, and so far this year we have already had two. I wonder if we will be getting any more snow this winter? Maybe I should invest in a snow plow. Maybe not.

Icy Roads

That snow was on a Friday, and on Saturday afternoon, we ventured down from our house to the street to see what the road conditions were. A friend had texted us some photos, but I wanted to see for myself. This is what we saw:

You might not be able to tell it from the photo, but that is solid ice. Not even slush. Just ice. Needless to say, we waited another 24 hours before we tried to go anywhere. Driving on snow is not all that fun for those of us who are not used to it, but it is still much better than driving on ice. Even I am smart enough to know that.

I know places farther north than here get lots of snow and ice all winter long. But it is still somewhat of a rarity for us, so we try to enjoy it as much as we can. That is why I just couldn’t let the first snowfall of the winter go by without sharing at least one snow photo. And an ice photo, too.

About the Photo

As I mentioned above, this was just a quick photo off the front porch. Fortunately, we have a glass door on the front porch. That allowed me to open the main door and leave the glass door closed. I could then set things on my camera while pointing it through the glass. That way, once I was actually outside all I had to do was to quickly compose my photo and press the shutter button. I did take two versions, just to be safe. This was the second one, if you are wondering.

The second photo was just a quick iPhone camera photo, although I really liked how it turned out as well. No fancy processing or anything on that one, by the way. Just straight out of the phone.
