Firing the Cannon

Last month, we spent a Saturday at the Ames Plantation Heritage Festival in Grand Junction, Tennessee. Laura was there to sell her handmade jewelry, while Jaylin and I were there just to look around at everything. This was our second year to go, and it is always fun to see the different displays of the heritage of the area where we live.

One highlight is always a group of Civil War soldiers who bring a few cannons with them. And not only do they bring them, but they also fire them. And as you might imagine, a cannon is LOUD. It is loud enough if you are expecting it, but it is even louder if you don’t know that it is coming. You can definitely hear the cannon fire from all over the festival. It is a good way of keeping up with the time, actually. Who needs a watch when you can just wait for a loud “BOOM!”

At the time that we actually got close to listen to one of the soldiers talk about the cannon before they fired it, I took a chance and left my ears unprotected so that I could get a good photo of it. I like all the smoke, both from the fuse and from the barrel.

And I’m sure that there could be something said about how I was shooting with my Canon while they were shooting their cannon. Although of course those shootings were completely different. Fortunately, no one was hurt by either one.
