Fall Tree in Our Yard

Trees are always interesting to me, but they are even more interesting in the fall.

This particular tree is a sweetgum tree, and it is one of the two mature trees in our front yard. The other mature tree is a pine, and obviously, it does not go through the same transformation in the autumn.

We didn’t plant this tree here - it came with the yard. But it has been interesting to watch it grow over the last 13 years. It wasn’t much bigger than a stick at first, but now it is probably 30 feet tall.

It is easy to see why the season after summer is called fall. As we were out driving the other day, it was a particularly windy day, and we kept driving through falling leaves. And acorns. Falling acorns hitting your car aren’t nearly as fun as falling leaves. Nothing like driving along and hearing a big “THUNK.”

I am not really sure why it is also called autumn, because none of the other seasons have two names. But most people just call it fall anyway, and that is fine with me. No offense, autumn.

And if you are curious, this photo is actually from a few weeks ago. The grass isn’t nearly that green anymore. And after the weekend winds, the tree doesn’t have nearly that many leaves, either.
