Cowboys at Trunk or Treat

Yee Haw!

Cowgirl Laura brought her horse, covered wagon, and campfire to our church’s annual Trunk or Treat for Halloween.

Every year, our church has its annual Trunk or Treat, where people decorate their trunks (or other parts of their cars, or just displays outside of their cars) and pass out candy to kids. It is a safe alternative to going door to door in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and it is always a fun time.

This year, things were slightly different. The event was scaled back somewhat to minimize contact as much as possible. And we had it during the daytime on the actual day of Halloween, so that anyone who wanted to could go trick or treating that night.

Laura always wants to take a horse to these events, but that is not exactly feasible for several different reasons. So instead, she brought a smaller horse, along with a covered wagon. I thought it was fun that the covered wagon was actually a wagon with a cover over it. Pretty cool!

We dressed up like cowboys, out on the prairie with our horse and wagon by the campfire. You can almost see a burlap bag at Laura’s feet. That was the horse’s feed bag, and I held the bag while Laura reached in to get the horse’s feed (candy) to pass out to the kids. Some of them got the joke, and most of their parents did, too.

Some of the smaller kids liked petting the horse, and several people commented on the campfire, too.

Here is a closer look at the horse and wagon, along with the campfire. I do have to say that this was entirely Laura’s idea, and I can’t take credit for it at all. She always has great ideas for these things, and I am always impressed by them. She made the campfire from tissue paper and toilet paper rolls. We had to do a little engineering to figure out how to make the hoops for the wagon cover and how to get them to stay like we wanted them.

Laura had actually done all of this for last year’s Trunk or Treat and Fall Festival, based on some ideas she had seen online. But car problems prevented us from being able to get there last year. It was nice to be able to save those things and use them for this year.

Because last year’s event was at night, Laura had created all of this with nighttime in mind. The campfire actually had a light it in that made it look even more like a fire at night, which was really cool. And we had lanterns in the wagon, too, one of which actually flickers like there is a flame inside. But it was nice to be outside in the daytime, too, where everything could be seen easily. And we could not have asked for more perfect weather.

We had a fun day, as did everyone there, it seems. And all the kids went home with full candy buckets. Sorry about that to the parents who had to deal with sugar rushes!
