Church Building in Sterling, Kansas

A Quick View

The Church of Christ building in Sterling, Kansas, in black and white on a winter day.

During our visit to Sterling, Jaylin and I were driving down the main street when we saw this building of the Sterling Church of Christ. I liked the look of it, so we pulled into a parking lot across the street. I had my camera in the trunk of the car, so I jumped out and got a couple of photos of the building. Cars kept passing by, so I had to wait for no cars for each photo, but it was worth the wait.

We could not tell anything about the church itself, only the church building in which the church meets. It was early in the morning, so I knew there would not be anyone there if they do have someone who keeps weekday office hours. We will have to check it out more on future visits, especially if we are there on a Sunday.

Traditional Church Look

I did like the more traditional architecture of the building. These days, more and more church buildings, especially in our area, try hard to look non-churchlike. Part of that is due to their larger size. But I would guess another part of that is the desire to stand out. Or maybe to attract those who are for whatever reason turned off by “traditional” church things.

I am an old-style, old-school (or maybe old-church) kind of guy. So I like being able to look at a building and immediately know that it is a church building and that a congregation meets there. I like the simple things, as well as the traditional things.

Of course, the church is not the building. The church is the people. The church building is just where the church meets. What is on the inside is much more important than what is on the outside. The building does not do God’s work. The people take care of that.

It is my hope that you are a part of a good, loving church family, no matter where it might meet.

About the Photo

As with the photo of the Sterling train station, it was a gray, cloudy morning when I took this photo. For the train station, I decided to use selective color. For the church building, I decided to go with just black and white. After all, the church building was white, the sky was gray, and the grass was its dormant winter brown color. So there really wasn’t too much color there to begin with. Black and white worked well.

I did not know what there might be to photograph in Sterling, but I had put my camera bag in the car when we were leaving for our trip, just in case. You never know what interesting things you might see.
