Cheeseburger with Cheese
The other day, Jaylin and I took two of our young friends to eat while their mom and Laura were busy with school stuff.
When we arrived at the House of Food, I went over everyone’s order, just to be sure I had it right. I usually know what Jaylin and I want, but I wanted to check with the others. One of them wanted a cheeseburger with just ketchup and no mustard, pickles, or onions. I am used to that, because for years Jaylin wanted his cheeseburger without pickles and onions, too.
Armed with that knowledge, I went to the counter to place the order.
“Hello, how are you?” the cashier asked.
“Good,” I said, “And how are you?”
“I’m good. Is this for here or to go?”
“Here. I need a cheeseburger with just ketchup.”
“And cheese?” She asked.
“Well, yes,” I said.
The person that lives inside my head was saying, “Well of course with cheese! That’s why I said a cheeseburger. Because if I had wanted a cheeseburger with just ketchup and no cheese, I would have asked for a hamburger with just ketchup.”
But I didn’t say any of that out loud. I just thought it was pretty funny, but I didn’t even laugh out loud, or LOL for all you younger folks.
When I told Laura later on, she said the cashier was probably just making sure, because you never do know about some of the customers that come into places like that. She was just covering herself. Which was a valid point. It still makes for a good story, though.
It reminds me of a family fishing trip many years ago. Dad and I were given the task of getting bait, so we went to the bait shop.
Dad said to the man at the counter, “I’ll have fifty crickets, please.”
“Okay,” the bait man said, “How many do you want?”
“Fifty,” Dad answered.
When we got back to the car, I was laughing, and Dad asked why. I said, “You asked for fifty crickets, and then he asked how many you wanted.”
“Oh,” he said, “I didn’t even realize that.”
