Bulletin Building in Sterling, Kansas

The colorful Bulletin building stands on one of the streets of Sterling, Kansas, as seen during our recent visit last month.
I enjoyed seeing the look of this building with its interesting architecture and old-style lamp post out front as we were driving down the street,. It is pretty easy to figure out that this building once housed the Sterling Bulletin newspaper, thanks to the words “Bulletin” and “Old Home Paper” on the building exterior. But the newspaper moved up the street at some time in the past, and now the building is home to the Point at Broadway Market coffee shop, as seen in the window.
Unfortunately, I did not get a close enough photo of the historical marker near the door to read what it says. It probably gives information that I would like to know about the building. That is what I get for not taking more time. The coffee shop was also open according to the sign in the window, but we did not stop long enough to go in. Maybe some other time when we are back again.
Because we were scheduled for a day at Sterling College, we did not have all that much time to check out the town. But because this building caught my eye, I pulled into a parking space across the street and got this quick photo. I’m sure the people that saw me thought I was some kind of weird stalker, rolling down my window for a photo before driving on. Rest assured, citizens of Sterling, I am just a guy with a camera who likes interesting buildings. No need to fear!
About the Photo
If you have seen the other photos that I shared from that morning in Sterling, you know that the day was gray and cloudy. However, this photo has a blue sky with clouds. How did that happen?
Those clouds are just a photographic trick. They were not actually there. I have been using Luminar AI on my recent photos. One of its features is “automatic” sky replacement. With just a click of the mouse, Luminar figures out where the sky is and replaces it with a different sky of your choice. This blue sky works better with the colors of the building than the gray sky did, at least in my opinion.
I consider my photography to be more artistic photography than documentary photography, so I don’t mind changing some things like the sky. That just makes the photo more interesting to me. If I were a journalist, things might be different. But I am just a guy with a website for entertainment. So I changed the sky.
I also increased the saturation to bring out the building colors even more. And I gave everything a nice, warm glow that you don’t normally find on a winter day.
