The Beach at Playa del Carmen in Mexico
Let’s take a trip back in time to our 2016 Cruise to Mexico for this relaxing photo.
Playa del Carmen
If you kept up with the Cruise to Mexico trip report and posts, you might realize that you haven’t seen any photos or much mention of this beach before. That is because we did not actually spend any time there. True story.
I know what you are thinking. “That beach looks beautiful! How could you not have spent any time there?” The short answer is that we just walked past it quickly on our way to other places.
The long answer is that our ship docked at Cozumel. From there, we rode the boat that takes you to the mainland, and it docked at Playa del Carmen. From there, we caught a bus to the Mayan ruins of Tulum, one of the highlights of our cruise. But as we walked along the pier from the boat dock to the bus, we did have this nice view of the beach along the way. Pretty tempting, isn’t it?
Laura at the Beach
Just to prove that we were actually there, as if someone wouldn’t believe us or something, here is photographic evidence of Laura at the same beach pictured above:
And yes, I know that saying “the beach at Playa del Carmen” is a little redundant. The Spanish word for beach is playa, and so the name of the place is actually Carmen Beach. But then Playa del Carmen is the name of the whole town and not just the beach. And I have said “the beach at Cocoa Beach” in more than one post around here. So it really is not all that redundant, right?
From Hot to Cold
It was really hot when we were walking past the beach at Playa del Carmen. But that has not been the case around here lately. It has been cold. No, wait - it has been beyond cold.
On one morning this week, the temperature outside was 8 degrees. That’s Fahrenheit and not Celsius, by the way. Few enough degrees that I could count all of them on two hands. I didn’t even have to use my feet. That just is not right. In fact, we went for a few days without the temperature ever getting above freezing. That means lots of trips outside to break up the ice in the horses’ water trough. Thanks, but I really did not need a reminder that I greatly prefer summer over winter!
I know we are not alone, however. I saw a news report that on January 1 only 10% of the nation saw temperatures above freezing. And we were not in that lucky 10%.
So let’s all hang in there together and hopefully, this cold snap will snap out of it soon. And I won’t complain about walking through mud in the horse pasture anymore.

About the Photo
If you could not guess from the story above, these photos were just quick shots as we walked past. No time to stop and get a better composition, because we did not want to miss our bus. And these were obviously with the fisheye lens, too, whose wide angle explains the sun streaking in from overhead.
