Some Enchanted Evening

Clouds fill the evening sky above the waters of the Pacific Ocean at Shipwreck Beach on the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaiʻi, as seen during our 2018 Kauaʻi Trip.

This photo was just one of the many wonderful views that we enjoyed during our evening up on the rocks near Shipwreck Beach. As you can see, at some times the clouds looked rather threatening, as if they might bring some rain. They did, in fact, bring some sprinkles. But there was no serious rain where we were.

However, if you look up in the clouds, you can see a rainbow in the sky. As you probably know, you can’t have a rainbow unless it is raining somewhere. So someone, somewhere was getting some rain. Maybe it was out over the water. I was just thankful that it was not where we were at the time, because we were not properly dressed for the rain.

The rainbow made an already beautiful scene even more beautiful, and it was indeed a wonderful sight to see.

Passing

My grandmother passed away recently, and she was my last living grandparent. She had lived a good, long life of almost 95 years, and I am thankful for the time that I got to spend with her. Good, godly grandparents are a great blessing from God, and I was blessed with four of them in my life.

Our minister at our church always asks the family for memories of their loved one to share during the funeral service, and so here are the memories that I shared:

To me, my grandmother was very much a southern farm girl. I have wonderful memories from when we would all go to the farm home of her parents, my great-grandparents. She would tell us all about the trees, the plants, the farm, and how they used to do things there. Also, she could identify any plant or tree just by seeing a leaf. She used all of that experience in the garden that my grandparents had, and we and so many others would enjoy the harvests that they produced. She was always willing to share whatever she had or all of her many talents.

When I was growing up, my grandmother would often say to me, “You should be a preacher.” I never did follow that advice, but I always knew that she was still proud of me, as she was of all of us grandchildren. On the somewhat rare occasions that we would see my grandfather’s brother, he would always know what we had been doing, because she and my grandfather always told him about all that we were involved. I know that was because she was proud of us and because she loved us. She loved everyone, including us grandchildren.

There was lots more that I could have said, but those were just a few things that came to mind. I was thankful that we were able to take two more family photos together over the 2018 holidays.

And then, we took a photo of the smaller family at Christmas:

I am definitely glad that we took a little effort to take those family photos. They are even more precious memories now.

Just another reminder to love those that you have while you have them, and create memories that will last.

About the Photo

The main photo in this post was taken with my Olympus camera, while the two family photos were taken with my Sony camera that I got after the Hawaiʻi trip. That may not matter to anyone but me, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I was actually surprised that I did not originally share that photo in the trip report. But it was nice to save it for a special occasion like this.
