At the Beach We Saw: The Ice Cream Man

Note: This is the second in a short series about things we saw at the beach.

On our recent trip to Cocoa Beach, Florida, we saw something at the beach that we have never seen before: the ice cream man.

I am used to the ice cream man driving through neighborhoods with music playing from his van as he hopes to sell ice cream to the neighborhood kids and their parents. Here on the beach, it was exactly the same way. Except that he wasn’t driving a van. Instead, he was pushing a couple of coolers on a cart with really big tires (good for rolling through the sand). Yes, he did have music playing. And yes, it is the same friendly/creepy music that you would expect from an ice cream man. He had the younger guy to his right with him, who was apparently assisting him in his ice cream duties. I guess. It was hard to tell, because they didn’t exactly dress alike. I guess there isn’t an ice cream man uniform, especially when you are walking up and down the beach.

If you are wondering, we did see some people actually buy some ice cream from him. Not many people, of course. But then I never have seen many people buy ice cream from the van-based ice cream men, either. And the best part was that he wasn’t stuck inside a van all day - he could just walk up and down the beach. That’s a perk worth having, in my opinion.

Hmm, that sounds like a good retirement option - walking up and down the beach, and even making a little money while you do it. And if you get hungry, just open a cooler and get some ice cream. Now that I think about it, I might not make that much profit. But I might be my best customer.
