A Small Cabin at Wall Doxey State Park
Too Small?
We came across a small cabin made of stone while walking at Wall Doxey State Park in Mississippi. But what was its purpose?
We never were sure what the purpose of this cabin was. The door was open, so we looked inside. It was wired for electricity with a light fixture (with no bulb) and an electrical outlet, so it wasn’t that it was a relic from long, long ago. Or if it was a relic, it was a somewhat updated relic.
But if you look, you can see that there is a hole in the roof. I did not notice that at first, but when we looked inside, it was obvious that light was coming in, and that was when I noticed the hole. The hole looked to have been there for a while, so I guessed that this building is not regularly used for anything important.
Also, this building was every bit as small as it looks here in the photo. If you were to step inside, you could have a little room to turn around, but you couldn’t do much more than that.
If you are wondering, Wall Doxey State Park does have cabins that you can stay in. They are definitely larger than this cabin. And they do not have holes in the roofs, either. If you came here looking for those, you might give the Wall Doxey State Park website a try.
Whatever the purpose of this building was, I thought it was a great photo opportunity. The stone wall leading up to it, the green of the autumn grass, the sunlight filtering through the trees. Everything was pretty cool about this scene.
I don’t know what it was for. But I was glad that we came across it.
If You Don’t Look For Something
This photo gave me an interesting thought. Keep in mind that what is interesting to me might not be interesting to you. But anyway, here it is:
If you don’t look for something, you might not find it.
There it is. Simple? Profound? Both? I will leave that up to you.
To tell the truth, we were not looking for this cabin. That was not our objective in going to Wall Doxey State Park. We did not start the day by saying, “Hey, let’s go see if we can find a really small cabin at Wall Doxey!”
But we did start the day by looking for something fun to do. We wanted to go have a good time, in the way that we like to have a good time. That way is exploring nature and seeing what we can see.
That was what we went looking for, and that was what we found. A good day spent with each other enjoying the outdoors. If we had stayed at home, we definitely would not have found that.
I know that you can find things that you aren’t looking for. That happens sometimes, but that is somewhat rare. If you really want to find something, you have to make at least some effort for it.
So while we were not looking for the cabin in the photo above, we were looking to have a good day spent together, and that is exactly what we found. It wasn’t much effort. Just packing a picnic lunch and going for a little drive. But it was worth it.

About the Photo
As with so many photos, this one benefitted greatly from the use of Aurora HDR to get the look that I wanted. Before processing, the highlights were bright and the shadows were dark. I was also able to add a bit of a golden glow that I thought was appropriate for the day.
