A Couple of Kids
The weekend before Independence Day, we spent a few days at the lake with our good friends and family, including the Riedels, Streets, Garretts, Holts, and my parents. We had lots of fun boating out on Kentucky Lake near Paris Landing, Tennessee, and we even got to see some of the sights of the area, too. In this photo, Laura and I have just had an enjoyable ride on the Wave Runner on a perfect day.
On one of our trips on the Wave Runner, Laura and I were out riding around when it looked like a boat was coming our way. Laura asked, “Is that the Coast Guard?”
“No,” I said. But then the more I looked at it, the more I thought it was the authorities coming toward us. So I came to a stop. And in fact, it was the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, or TWRA. They are the ones who check for registrations and such on the Tennessee waterways.
I was wondering what the problem might be. Obviously, there are no speed limit signs out there, so they couldn’t say we were going too fast, could they? We both had on lifevests, so that couldn’t be a problem. We weren’t threatening the safety of anyone else on the lake, at least not that I knew of.
Once the TWRA boat made its way over to where we stopped, one of the officers said, “Oh, we thought you were a couple of kids!”
I said, “You don’t hear that very often once you reach 40.” Just to make sure that they knew we were of a legal age.
The officer said that because they thought we were teenagers, they were going to do a boater safety check. But once they realized we weren’t quite kids, they just made sure we had a fire extinguisher on board and sent us on our way.
And of course, we immediately made our way over to where our friends were to tell them that we looked like a couple of kids. Because we don’t hear that every day.
Of course, one friend asked me, “Did you have a cap on?” No, I didn’t. “Well then I think the TWRA guys need their eyes checked!”
Always good to have friends to knock you back down to the appropriate level of humility. But that didn’t stop us from telling everyone the rest of the weekend that we are just a couple of kids.
